The School of Sciences and Engineering Operations Committee (SSE OpCom) is pleased to announce the appointment of Mrs. Mary Chona del Castillo as the Department Chair of Science from the 2nd Semester of AY 2024-2025. She takes over from Dr. Edwin Olmos, who is set to retire by the end of the year.
Mrs. del Castillo teaches Chemistry and Science, Technology, and Society (STS) and has worked actively as a researcher in various research centers. She has published papers on marine biology in Scopus-indexed publications. She has two master's degrees from the University of Philippines Visayas and the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia.
We thank Dr. Olmos for his dedicated service to SSE, especially as program director of the BS Industrial Engineering program and chair of the Science Department. We wish him a happy retirement and look forward to his continued service as a part-time faculty member.

Dumalo ang buong UA&P Kagawaran ng Filipino sa taunang Likhaan: UP Writers Night na ginanap sa Gimenez Gallery sa University of the Philippines, Diliman noong Nobyembre 28.
Tampok sa pagtitipon ang mga bunga ng programang Literature for Social Development, kabilang ang serye ng mga proyekto at kolaborasyon ng Likhaan: UP Institute of Creative Writing at iba't ibang manunulat, artista, at organisasyon. Binalikan din ang mga forum, publikasyon, at palihang nag-ugnay sa iba't ibang manlilikha.
Ang UP Writers Night ay naging makabuluhang okasyon upang makihalubilo at makipagpalitan ng ideya ang Kagawaran sa mga batikan at bagong henerasyon na mga manunulat sa bansa. Naging daan din ito upang muling makibahagi sa mundo ng malikhaing pagsulat at magbigay-inspirasyon upang lumikha ng mga tula, kuwento, at dula sa hinaharap.

Dr. Nicomedes B. Alviar, dean of the UA&P School of Social Sciences, Law, and Governance (SLG), is one of the recipients of the 9th Distinguished Thomasian Alumni Award. Conferred by the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Alumni Association, this prestigious award recognizes graduates who embody Thomasian values and have achieved exceptional accomplishments in their fields, both in the Philippines and abroad.
Dr. Alviar completed his high school education, AB Asian Studies, and MA in Political Science at UST before earning his PhD in Political Science from the University of the Philippines Diliman. His dedication to education is evident in his extensive experience as an educator and researcher. Beyond academia, he actively contributes to civic volunteerism, values education, good governance, and social work, particularly for the underprivileged, through his involvement in various non-government organizations.
Dr. Alviar’s commitment to service extends to his membership in esteemed organizations such as the Philippine Political Science Association, the Philippine Council for Foreign Relations, the Galing Pook Foundation, and the International Editorial Board of the Philippine Social Science Review. His multifaceted career reflects a lifelong passion for learning, teaching, and making a meaningful impact on society.
