School of Law and Governance renamed

Upon approval of the Management Committee, the School of Law and Governance shall be renamed School of Social Sciences, Law, and Governance effective November 3, 2022. This is to recognize the valuable and indispensable role of the Social Sciences in the profound understanding and effective practice of Law and Governance. The Social Sciences provide rich conceptual foundations and broad perspectives for a holistic and in-depth grasp of human nature, family, society, and the global community of nations which are essential to Law and Governance, disciplines with tendencies to be largely practical. This is consistent with UA&P’s mission: To create and spread a culture that strengthens the dignity of the human person, and the unity of the family, and that promotes understanding and cooperation among persons of all races, beliefs, and social conditions.

The change of name emphasizes as well the multidisciplinary approach of the School of Social Sciences, Law, and Governance, the brand of education that UA&P fosters, in comparison with the current trend in many higher education institutions towards increasing specializations and segmentation of areas of studies oftentimes leading to scarce collaboration among colleges or faculties of Political Science, Law, Economics, Public Administration, Urban Planning, etc. It is the belief of the School of Social Sciences, Law, and Governance that the growing complexity of contemporary society requires bringing people, groups, and institutions from diverse backgrounds and expertise together for a common purpose to face multifaceted challenges of our time such as social inequalities, disaster management, human security, poverty, and geopolitical conflicts.

The new name recognizes the prominent role of Political Economy, the Social Science program that previously laid the groundwork for the establishment of the School. UA&P has acquired prestige as a pioneer in this academic field in the Philippines and in ASEAN, and is the only university in the country offering it as undergraduate and graduate programs. Many of our alumni are now in leadership positions here and abroad.

Looking towards the future, the School of Social Sciences, Law, and Governance opens itself to expansion, and to offering new courses beyond Law and Governance such as Sociology, Development Studies, International Relations, Security and Strategic Studies, and others relevant to addressing society’s needs.

In pursuing such identity and goals, the School of Social Sciences, Law, and Governance values even more its continuing collaboration with other units in the University, particularly with the College of Arts and Sciences, and the School of Economics upon whose expertise in their disciplines the School relies for assistance significantly.

The School retains the acronym SLG.
