SSE’s Tokyo study tour highlights innovation and leadership
From May 25 to 31, 2025, the School of Sciences, Engineering, and Technology (SSE) of the University of Asia and the Pacific (UA&P) undertook an academic and corporate study tour in Tokyo, Japan. Leading the delegation was Dr. Varsolo Sunio, Director of the Industrial Engineering Program. Four UA&P students, namely Luke Soriano, Luise Paner, Andrew Choa, and Nic Kenneth Padilla joined the tour.
The itinerary, inspired by SSE’s vision of integrating engineering and technology with strong business acumen, featured visits to two top universities, a renowned graduate school of leadership, and three leading corporate institutions.
At the Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology, Dr. Takanori Sakai welcomed the group to the Urban Freight Research Lab (UFRL), where a joint seminar tackled the dynamics between urban freight and land use. The delegation also visited the University of Tokyo’s Graduate School of Engineering, where Dr. Kimihiro Hino hosted a research exchange on mobility, safety, and the built environment using survey data and big data techniques. Dr. Sunio took the opportunity to introduce UA&P and its current research initiatives, from shipment consolidation and transport electrification to public transport governance and financing models.

The team also visited Shizenkan University Graduate School of Leadership and Innovation, where Mr. Junichi Kagaya shared the school’s whole-person education philosophy and its collaboration with IESE Business School. A short walking tour of the nearby Nihonbashi area, including COREDO Muromachi and the Bank of Japan, added a cultural layer to the visit.

On the corporate side, the delegation met with ALMEC Corporation, a global planning and management consultancy involved in various JICA-funded projects in Asia and across the world. Dr. Chen-Wei Li, Mr. Yosui Seki, and Dr. Tithiwach Tansawat shared their global project experience and career advice with the students.

The group also visited the headquarters of Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy (LVMH) Japan GK. Mr. Lloyd Besin, LVMH’s Procurement Director, walked the students through the intricacies of luxury brand supply chains and procurement while offering career advice based on his journey—from managing Uniqlo store rollouts in Europe to joining LVMH.

At Zevero Japan, a forward-thinking sustainability startup, CEO Mr. Marvin Mori talked about how companies can reduce their carbon footprint using AI-powered tools. He also gave a candid comparison between working at large corporations like Toshiba and BloombergNEF versus life at a startup.

Of course, no trip to Tokyo would be complete without immersing in its culture. The group explored some of the city’s most iconic neighborhoods: Shibuya, Shinjuku, Akihabara, and the historic Imperial Palace.
Plans are already underway for SSE’s next international academic and corporate immersion in 2026.
UA&P Kagawaran ng Filipino nagbahagi ng papel pampananaliksik sa DLSU 8th ICAPS
Aktibong nakilahok ang University of Asia & the Pacific sa 8th International Conference on Asian and Philippine Studies (DLSU-ICAPS) ng Dela Salle University na ginanap noong Mayo 29–31, 2025, sa Krisalis-Benilde Retreat and Conference Center sa Tagaytay City.
Tampok ang tatlong guro mula sa Kagawaran ng Filipino na sina Dr. Moreal Camba na nagbahagi ng kaniyang pag-aaral na may pamagat na “Ang Ningning ng Proyektong City Beautiful: Pagbabalik-Tanaw sa Ilang Piling Retrato ng Manila Carnival (1908–1915);” G. Louise Vincent B. Amante sa kanyang pag-aaral na “Mondomanila" mula sa maikling kuwento patungong nobela at pelikula sa kanyang pag-aaral na “Ang Mahaba-habang Paglalakbay ng Mondomanila,” at G. Albert Lagrimas sa kaniyang papel na “AI sa Filipino: Kawastuhan, Kasapatan, Validasyon, at Pagsipat sa Lente ng Wika at Gramatika ng AI Bilang Kagamitang Pampagtuturo sa Filipino.”
Dinaluhan ito ng mahigit kumulang na 400 delegado mula sa iba’t ibang bahagi ng mundo na kinabibilangan ng mga guro, mag-aaral mula sa Senior High School, batsilyer, at gradwadong pag-aaral. Gayundin ng mga guro at propesor mula sa iba’t ibang paaralan at unibersidad sa buong mundo. Nahati rin ang mga delegado sa iba’t ibang Panel mula A-Y para sa onsite, at panel 1-24 para sa online na mga kalahok. Sa bawat panel ipinamalas ng mga delegado ang kanilang husay sa pananaliksik sa pamamagitan ng pagtalakay ng kani-kanilang mga papel pampananaliksik at pagsagot ng mga tanong batay sa kanilang ginawang pag-aaral.
Naging pangunahing tagapanayam sa unang araw ng kumperensiya si Dr. Ador R. Torneo, dekano ng College of Liberal Arts sa paksang “Advancing Asian and Philippine Studies in the Global Scholarship – Trends, Prospects, and Strategies,” at ikalawang araw si Dr. Feorillo Petronillo Demeterio III, Direktor ng DLSU University Research Coordination Office, sa paksang “Mga Danas at Karanasan sa AI” samantalang tinalakay naman sa online ng mga tagapanayam nina Dr. Gregorio E. H. Del Pilar, Propesor mula sa departamento ng Psychology
ng Unibersidad ng Pilipinas, at Dr. Maria Mercedes E. Arzadon, Kawaksing propesor mula sa Kolehiyo ng Edukasyon ng Unibersidad ng Pilipinas, at tinalakay ang paksang “Ang Pagsulong sa isang Matibay na Programa tungo sa Edukasyong Multilinggwal sa Pilipinas.”
Muling pinatunayan ng DLSU 8th ICAPS ang kahalagahan ng patuloy na pagsusulat at paglulunsad ng mga makabuluhang pananaliksik mula sa iba’t ibang larang at higit sa lahat ang kahalagahan ng pagbabahagi nito sa lalo pang pagpapayabong ng kultura.
UA&P Kagawaran ng Filipino lumahok muli sa Translators’ Forum
Panukalang batas para sa propesyonalisasyon ng mga tagasalin, isinusulong
Muling lumahok ang UA&P Kagawaran ng Filipino sa Translators’ Forum ng Kasalin Network noong Mayo 27 (Martes) sa Gimenez Gallery sa Unibersidad ng Pilipinas-Diliman. Itinaguyod ang nasabing forum ng Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino.
Kabilang ang UA&P Kagawaran ng Filipino sa Kasalin Network na binubuo ng iba’t ibang samahan at institusyong pangwika at mga ahensya ng pamahalaan na nagsusulong ng mga programang pangwika gaya ng pagsasalin.
Isa sa mga layunin ng forum ay ang pagsusulong ng propesyonalisasyon ng mga tagasalin sa pamamagitan ng panukalang-batas na ihahain sa paparating na ika-20 Kongreso ng Republika ng Pilipinas.
Bago ihain ang nasabing panukalang-batas, pinag-usapan muna sa forum ang mga probisyon nito. Nakilahok sa mga pangkatang talakayan ng mga partikular na bahagi ng panukalang-batas sina Dr. Moreal N. Camba, tagapangulo ng Kagawaran; G. Louise Vincent B. Amante, G. Albert A. Lagrimas, at Dr. Leodivico C. Lacsamana. Nagmungkahi ang mga pangkat ng mga ideya tungo sa pagpapabuti ng mga probisyon ng panukalang-batas.

ITec Research Colloquium 2025
The Department of Information Science and Technology (IST) invites everyone to Code to Community: ITec Research Colloquium 2025 to be held on June 5 (Thursday) from 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm at the PLDT Hall.
The colloquium, which highlights the theme “Advancing Transformative Research in Information Technology,” will feature the capstone projects of the IT seniors in the form of innovative solutions that bridge code with community impact. With a plenary session and two breakout sessions, the colloquium will showcase how student-led research can spark real-world change.
ITec, or the Information Technology Community, is the student organization of the IST.
