On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I am pleased to announce the conferment of the rank of Associate Professor on Veronica L. Isla, Ph.D., effective 1 December 2022.
Dr. Isla obtained her Doctor of Philosophy in Communication (2006) and Bachelor of Arts in Broadcast Communication from the University of the Philippines Diliman. She holds two master’s degrees, a Master of Arts in Communication from the Ateneo de Manila University and a Master of Arts in Values Education from UA&P. Her doctoral dissertation entitled “Representation of the Urban Poor in Lino Brocka Films” received the Best Dissertation Award and the Gloria Feliciano Award from the College of Mass Communication of UP Diliman. Based on this earlier work, she wrote The Face of Urban Poverty in the Cinema of Brocka which was published by the U.P. Press in 2020.
As the first Program Director of the School of Communication’s (SCM) Media and Entertainment Management (MEM) Program (Producer’s Track), she has been responsible for its curriculum design and implementation, which she has carried out in consultation with her vast network of industry practitioners. This also has resulted in two additional tracks under the MEM program, the Screenwriting Track, and the Artist’s Track. In 2019, she was appointed Operations Committee Secretary of SCM, where she has been teaching courses across its programs since 2006. Aside from performing her role as MEM Program Director since 2015, she has also been overseeing the accreditation of SCM programs for the past eight years.
She co-authored Media and Information (for senior high school), published by Oxford University Press. Her publications in international journals, participation in international conferences, and appointment as the Country Director of the Asian Congress for Media Communication (2008-2013) affirm her expertise in media and information literacy, film and television studies, media and entertainment industry, and media ethics.
Prior to joining SCM, she was a faculty member of the College of Arts and Sciences where she handled film classes and pioneered the course Applied Integrated Studies. From 2001 to 2008, she served as the editor-in-chief of CAS Review, which led to her appointment as the Publications Head of the College of Arts and Sciences from 2006 to 2008. She was also a contributing editor for the Center for Research & Communication (2012 to 2014) and Synergeia (2015-2021), UA&P’s official journal.
Please join me in congratulating Dr. Veronica Isla on her promotion and in supporting her as she assumes the duties and responsibilities of Associate Professor of UA&P.

FlexiCare Health Bulletin
In compliance with the 1% increase in the mandated contributions to PhilHealth effective calendar year 2022, which was announced only in May 2022, all PhilHealth members and employers have been required to remit retroactive differential contributions by the end of 2022. In line with this, the retroactive contributions will be applied during the coming 16-30 November payroll, which will be credited on 28 November 2022. The required retroactive deductions (for January to May 2022 or 5 months worth) have been scheduled during this payroll period to coincide with the crediting of the 13th month pay so that the impact on employees’ take-home pay may be cushioned.
